This article examines the comparative suffix i̯ah in Old Iranian. This suffix belongs to the family of derivatives in s (the suffix forming abstract nouns) and is reconstructed in Proto Indo European as * i̯os < i̯o os . In other words, it is an s stem derived from a formation containing the verbal or nominal suffix i̯o , associated with the Caland system. In Proto Indo European, this suffix had an intensifying or elative function and gradually acquired a comparative meaning. The superlative suffix was likewise formed on the basis of this comparative suffix. In Avestan, the suffix appears as iiah and in Old Persian as yah . It is attached to the full grade root and forms comparative adjectives. The comparatives formed with this suffix can be divided into several groups according to their roots. These comparatives occur in various syntactic constructions, which will be examined and analyzed. Reflexes of this suffix survive in Parthian, but it was no longer used to form comparatives in Middle Persian.
